I am glad you like our project! Unfortunately, we do not have much time right now to implement new features for Clone Detective any time soon. However, for our next version we are planning to implement the following features:

Blacklisting. This will allow clones to be excluded.

Fuzzy Clones. This will also find duplicated source code that is "almost" identical.

VB.NET Support. Speaks for itself :-)

Thanks for using Clone Detective and stay tuned!

All the best,
Immo

New Post: Feature proposal

First of all - thanks for excellent job!!! Very well done!

However I would like to propose a feature to consider.

It will be very cool to have ability to mark clone class for exclusion, to be ignored. Let say I have complex property setter, same in different layers. I know it is duplication, but have no other choice...

I would like to eliminate it from report if used exactly as stored in library and get warning if implementation is similar but different. Do you see the point?

Even if half done, just skipping warnings on some code marked to ignore this way, will be useful.

Thanks again!

New Post: can't get "Clone Percentage"

great!!

now works!

tks

sorry for the inconvenience.

One possible reason is that you really do not have any clones (because a percentage of zero is just hidden to avoid noise in the clone explorer tree view). You can double check that by temporarily copy & pasting a large chunk of code (more than 10 LOC) and re-run the detection.

If you still do not see any clone percentage ask again so that we can tackle that problem.

Thanks for the feedback; I'm glad that you could get it to work :-)

Best regards, Thomas

New Post: Error log

Hi Thomas,

Your question provided me with the answer :-)

I had the Java Home setting set up wrong. It was pointing at Java version 1.4.2_03. I set it up to point at version 1.6 and now Clone detective runs.

The way i had tried the different versions of Java, was to open up the java console, and disabling/enabling the various versions. This is a method i have used to control java versions with other applications with success, but since Clone Detective apparently uses a path directly to the java binaries, it wont work with Clone Detective.

Thanks for your time

/Jakob

I have tried with 3 different versions of java 1.4.2_03, 1.5.0_01 and 1.6.0_15 all gave the same result. I even tried dowloading and building the latest developer version of Clone Detective (36394). That didn't help either.

Glad to hear that! I've added you to the project a moment ago. Also good to know that ConQAT's C++ detection works for production code bases.

For developing VS plugins AFAIK you need at least Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition. What you definitely need is the Visual Studio SDK and some other stuff for being able to build and debug the source code, documentation, and setup. We have a list of all the tools (which is quite long for something that looks like a simple VS plugin) on the Downloads page (http://clonedetectivevs.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=16114).

Kind regards,
Thomas

New Post: Is anyone working on new releases?

Hi Thomas,

Item a) is now a lot less important to me. I've just changed jobs to a purely c# role. Partly motivated by the lack of decent modern tools in c++. On the plus side, I've now got a few weeks of spare time until I start in my new role. So a little work on something like this could be great fun. Do I need a pro-level version of VS to develop plugins though?

On the c++ support - I used conqat's c++ detection - once I figured out the right options, and it was certainly adequate for the most part.

New Post: Is anyone working on new releases?

Hi Lance,

Sorry for the long delay. Currently things are very stressful so I want to apologize that it took me two weeks to answer your post.

At first I want to thank you very much for using Clone Detective and providing feedback! Great to hear that you like it.

As you've probably seen the last check-in has been made by Immo back in January. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that the project is not under active development (currently!). But that doesn't mean that Clone Detective is dead or we won't work on it any more. We have plans on updating it and releasing new versions in the future. The only problem is that we just didn't have enough spare time to work on it in the last months and unfortunately it looks like this will also be the case in the next weeks.

So what are our plans concretely?

You might have seen that a new version of ConQAT has been released on Tuesday. Our plans are to update CD to build upon ConQAT 2.5, fix at least the issues where our product prevents successful installation of other Visual Studio extensions, and of course provide some new features. With these changes being made we'd like to release an updated version for users of Visual Studio 2008 because the next version of Visual Studio still needs some time to bake and many users can't or won't update immediately when it is done.

For Visual Studio 2010 our plans are very vague. We'd like to support a feature of ConQAT called "gapped clones" which really shows off the benefits of clone detection on production code. We have some very early sketches of what the UI could look like which clearly indicate that we want to build upon WPF and the new VS Text Editor. But as I've said: It's very early and we haven't put enough thought into these ideas yet.

Having laid out our plans I'd like to talk a little bit about your ideas. Personally I'd love to see support for C++ in CD as well and a lot of our users want support for VB. We're completely aware of that and of course we want to address the need. However there are some caveats which let us step back and not implement support for other languages at the moment. The biggest issue is that while we know that ConQAT supports C++ we have no idea of the language level they support. What we clearly not want to provide is a half-baked solution that only supports a subset of the C++ programming language because that would cause a lot of irritation and frustration among our users. Additionally support for managed C++ and C++/CLI would be great and once again we currently don't know whether it's supported by ConQAT. That said We're actively working with the ConQAT team to resolve this issue.

What you've also mentioned is categorization of clones which is another fantastic idea that should make working with clones a lot easier. I'd also like to see this in the product.

Would you like to implement some of your ideas? We would be more than happy to welcome you in our team and help us bring clone detection to the masses.

Best regards,
Thomas

New Post: Is anyone working on new releases?

Clone detective is great. I've already found it to be quite handy.

There's a couple of items on my wish list though:

a) We have mixed c++ and c# solutions, so I'd love support for c++ - I know conqat has it, so surely it shouldn't be hard to add?

b) some sort of preview of snippets in the clone classes. I'm not entirely sure what's needed there, just that at the moment it feels a bit like I'm having to click blindly to find clone classes that I'm concerned about

c) some way to flag a clone as ok to ignore, need to fix

Is anyone actually working on this project, or should I scratch my own itch?

Regards,

Lance

New Post: It simply don't work

Hi,

the Video Page "Introduction to Clone Detective" provide a very useful tool. Maybe it is, but after install there is no item in VS Tools menu and the Tools - Options - Clone Detective setting page only show "An error occoured loading this property page"

I tried to repair, i tried to reinstall, same result.

And as i looked to the many issues at the discussions section (the most of them without answer, some of them just with questions and no hints ... ) it looks to me like this app is primary poor developed. I'm really glad now that this thing don't ruined my VS settings like in other issues described.

My environment is Vista 32 bit UltimateEdition, VS2008 TeamEdition SP1, .NET 3.5 SP1, jre6, VS2005 TeamEdition, all with latest updates. 4 GB RAM machine.

Take this offline until it works properly not only in your developing or test environment (if you have something like that).

New Post: Error: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.

I got this error:

What does it mean? I use Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, VS2008 SP1.

When I look in the log file I find this:
* WARN : Could not read file: File 'E:\Projects\Incordia.Framework\Dev\Solutions' not found[E:\Projects\Incordia.Framework\Dev\Solutions (Access is denied)] (DefaultCloneDetection.cqa.clonedetection.detection.detection-unfiltered)
* ERROR : Processor 'DefaultCloneDetection.cqa.clonedetection.detection.detection-unfiltered' failed gracefully: Empty input encountered! Clone detection aborted. (DefaultCloneDetection.cqa.clonedetection.detection.detection-unfiltered)
Before these lines it's only INFO messages, after them there's a lot of WARN messages.

E:\Projects\Incordia.Framework\Dev\Solutions is a folder that "Everyone" has full control of.

I've got this structure:
Dev\Solutions\Incordia.Framework.sln
Dev\Src\...Projects..
Dev\Test\...TestProjects...

When I tried to move Incordia.Framework.sln to the root it all worked well. Maybe some bug that makes gets the path to the solution mixed up..?
I can't don't want to change the structure of the solution. So I need this fixed.

Is there any way to make it work? Can I in some way try to fix it myself? How do I debug it?

I encountered a problem running Clone Detective for the first time. I have Win XP SP3 and VS 2008 Team Suite SP1 with the latest .NET Framework (3.5 SP1) and Java (1.6 Update 12) versions.

After analyzing the C# source code successfully, Clone Detective fails because it cannot open the clone report (see the end of the log below). I opened the "Ums.Dmc.CloneDetective.Clones.user" file, and it contains 153KB of "null" binary data (all 00). Obviously this is a problem if it's supposed to be XML.

sorry that our product did confuse you. May be we should update the docs to explain this settings in more depth.

Two options:

Reset the path to an empty string and reboot the IDE. Next time, the path will be auto configured.

Set the path to something like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0_07 (please nothe thate the trailing "bin" is missing).

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.
